OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine (WMTW) - A New Hampshire man is under arrest after police said he stole a car in Old Orchard Beach and tried to carjack a driver in Saco before being fought off by the owner.

Police said Jeffery Lavery, 34, of Harrisville, New Hampshire, forced his way into a home in Old Orchard Beach at about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Lavery took the homeowner’s car keys but was confronted by a man who was home. Police said Lavery got into a struggle with the man and was unable to steal the car.

Police said minutes later Lavery went to another home in Old Orchard Beach and tried to steal a motor scooter. Officials said he assaulted a man but did not take the motor scooter.

Lavery is then accused of going to a third home in Old Orchard Beach and stole a vehicle belonging to the couple who lived there.

Investigators said Lavery then went to Saco, where he cut off a driver on Portland Road and forced the victim out of the car.

Lavery tried to drive off in this second car but the driver pulled him out of the vehicle, police said.

Police said Lavery then took off in the car he stole from Old Orchard Beach but was eventually arrested by police in Wells.

Lavery faces robbery charges and was taken to the York County Jail in Alfred.
